Evan Caplinger
My interest in audio equipment first stemmed from my career as a musician and composer. I grew up playing piano and cello, and played in orchestras throughout my school years. I earned my BA in Music from Columbia University in 2019. I also began working in electronic music at Columbia's historic Computer Music Center, home of one of the oldest synthesizers in existence (!) along with some current cutting-edge research.
My first pair of high-end headphones were the Sennheiser HD558, which I owned in high school; while searching for a new pair in college, I became entranced by the world of high-end headphones, and began to seek out new and exciting technologies. I began to write about what I was writing about online, which is when I first got acquainted with Headphonesty; since then, I've also worked in the industry at Audio46 in New York, and written for other major audio publications like MajorHifi.
Outside of audio, I currently live in New York city and work as a composer and performer at venues across the city. My pieces have been performed by some of New York's leading ensembles, and I've been afforded the opportunity to perform at some great venues. I help build synthesizer modules and pedals for CuteLab NYC. I also do freelance web design and programming.
I view audiophilia as a hobby as entirely separate from my work as a musician. Still, I find that my experience as a musician contributed a great deal to my ability to hear certain details and discern audio quality relative to the real-world experience of playing music.
